Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s diverse student body as an Assistant Professor of the UTRGV School of Music beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year.
 
The School of Music at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Trumpet (tenure-track) to join a collaborative team of faculty, staff, and students within our School of Music. In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate applied lessons, directing the trumpet ensemble/chamber music coaching, and teaching classes in trumpet pedagogy and literature. The successful candidate will also be expected to recruit undergraduate/graduate students and cultivate positive relations with faculty and regional high school band programs.
 
The successful candidate will engage in research/creative activity through endeavors such as high-quality performances, publications, guest artist appearances, conference presentations, performances with orchestras and chamber groups, and internal/external funding.
In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and mentor students in research, outreach, and professional development. Successful candidates will be strong recruiters capable of broadening participation among members of under-represented groups; will demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; will integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and will provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
 
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley, most notably on the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Teach undergraduate and graduate applied trumpet.
· Direct trumpet ensemble and/or coach chamber music,
· Teach weekly studio classes,
· Teach high brass methods courses as needed,
· Academic Advising for trumpet majors,
· Recruit top-quality students into the UTRGV Trumpet Studio,
· Service work appropriate for the level of Assistant Professor,
· Creative Activity/Research/Performances at a level to obtain a national presence in the field,
· Other duties as assigned by the Director of the School of Music.

Department/College Background:
The UTRGV School of Music is located on the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses and prepares students to succeed as teachers, performers, and scholars by studying diverse musical styles, genres, and traditions; conducting research; and collaborating with each other as well as with local, national, and global communities. Through extensive community engagement, service learning, and exceptional performance opportunities, we expand the understanding of music and enrich the cultural life in our local society and beyond. The School of Music has over 400 students and over 50 faculty members. Degrees offered include a Bachelor of Music with Teacher Certification, a Bachelor of Music in Performance, a Bachelor of Music in Music Technology, a Bachelor of Music in Composition, and Master’s Degrees in Music Education, Performance, Ethnomusicology, and Conducting.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in a relevant field of music by the start date of the appointment (August 2024).
- Documented experience and accomplishments in trumpet performance.
- Demonstrated success in college-level teaching.
- The ability to contribute through research, teaching, and service to the mission of UTRGV and the School of Music.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience teaching applied trumpet full-time at the university level or equivalent experience in full-time professional music ensembles.
- Demonstrated ability to connect with region high school band program directors and students.
- Experience with developing and implementing systematic recruitment activities that include but are not limited to off-campus high school visitations, on-campus clinics, and workshops for area high school students.
- Established profile as a performing artist or demonstrated potential to develop a national-level profile as a performing artist.
