On August 2nd at 11:30 am as part of the NYC DOT’s  Summer Streets program, 91 trumpeters will line the car-free Park Avenue from 46th Street just north of Grand Central Terminal to 72nd Street, transforming the canyon of the Avenue into a concert hall. Tens of thousands of pedestrians and bicyclists will pass through the soft blanket of sound created by the trumpet players in the US premiere of Craig Shepard's Trumpet City. The September 20th performance along Meeker Avenue reclaims the space under the BQE.

The music is made up of four 15-minute sections, which may flow one into the next. Each section contains a single melody consisting of long tones perforated by silence. The melody starts in the low range of the trumpet, blending with the drone of traffic noise. Over the course of the hour, the trumpets rise out of this drone. The piece was commissioned by the Musikpodium of the City of Zurich, has been realized on Lake Zurich in March 2009, and presented by Dampfzentrale Bern on the banks of the Aare River in Switzerland August 2013.
