Bobby Shew named ITG Honorary Award Recepient for 2015

Jazz Trumpet Artist and noted clinician Bobby Shew has been awarded the International Trumpet Guild’s Honorary Award. This Award was established by the International Trumpet Guild for the purpose of recognizing "those individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the art of trumpet playing." These contributions are through performance, teaching, publishing, research, and/or composition.

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bobby Shew’s career spans all aspects of the jazz and commercial idiom of the trumpet. After leaving his hometown, Bobby spent 3 years with the famed NORAD multi-service band. A series of engagements with the bands of Tommy Dorsey Woody Herman and Buddy Rich soon followed. Many other professional engagements followed, including a lengthy stay in Las Vegas. By this time, Bobby had established quite a reputation as a lead trumpet player rather than a jazz soloist. So late in 1972 he decided to make a move to the Los Angeles area in order to get re-involved in developing as a jazz player. Opportunities as a sideman and leader followed, along with recordings (including a Grammy nomination) and work in the studios.

Today, in addition to a busy performing and private teaching schedule, Bobby spends a considerable amount of time actively involved in the educational system, conducting clinics and master classes at high schools and college campuses all over the world. Bobby has also been active on the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild, and has acted as National Trumpet Chairman for the International Association of Jazz Educator's for 16 years. He has authored numerous articles of educational interest in various trade magazines, all translated into several languages for worldwide distribution. During a period of traveling to New Zealand, Bobby acted as host for a weekly TV show entitled 'Just Jazz' and has been in numerous artist-in-residence situations virtually all over the world.
