Clarence Mitchell residency at East Tennessee State University

Clarence Mitchell, Senior Master Sergeant (ret.) of The United States Air Force Band, was in residence at East Tennessee State University from February 28 until March 2. Mitchell presented a master class, taught private lessons, and performed on the First Presbyterian Church of Bristol, TN Art Series with Dr. David Champouillon, Professor of Trumpet at ETSU and Bach Artist/Clinician. Mitchell performed Henry Purcell’s “Trumpet Overture” from The Indian Queen and Giuseppe Torelli’s Sonata in D Major for Trumpet, G.7. Champouillon performed Purcell’s Sonata in D Major for Trumpet and Giovanni Bonaventura Viviani‘s Sonata Prima per Trombetta Sola. They performed together on Petronio Franceschini’s Sonata in D Major for Two Trumpets and Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto in C Major for Two Trumpets, RV 537. The Pro Musica Chamber Ensemble performed with both trumpeters who have been friends for over 35 years. They served together in the USAF band system. Mitchell is currently a freelance professional musician and adjunct faculty member of the Landon School of Bethesda in the National Capital Region of Washington, DC.  Prior to this, he began his twenty-eight year military career as Principal Cornet and Soloist with the United States Air Force Band of the Golden Gate. He has also performed as Principal and Solo Cornet with the Air Force Band of New England.  In 1987, Mitchell became a member of the premier unit, The United States Air Force Band in Washington DC.  Initially with the Ceremonial Brass unit, he spent more than 20 years as a member of The United States Air Force Concert Band.

As a chamber musician, Mitchell has performed with several ensembles and groups including as tour soloist with the USAF String Orchestra, leader and solo trumpet with the USAF Tower Brass Quintet and Dixieland Band. As an Air Force musician, Mr. Mitchell has toured 49 states and 6 countries. He can be heard on 6 vinyl albums and more than 35 Compact Discs distributed internationally. In additional, he can be seen and heard in the first and only DVD Broadway-style musical production, “Born of a Dream”, as a featured cast member performing as a jazz soloist.  He retired after a distinguished 28-year career at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (E-8).


His civilian performance career includes numerous orchestras, brass ensembles, and solo recitals. A graduate of Temple University, Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition in 1979. He has a long list of distinguished trumpet teachers including Navy School of Music teachers Dean Palmer and Paul Taylor (Principal Trumpet of the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra, a Northwestern graduate and a Vincent Cichowicz student); Seymour Rosenfeld, 2nd Trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra for 42 years; Mr. Laurie McGaw, retired Associate Principal Trumpet of the San Francisco Orchestra; Charles Duval, former Principal Trumpet of the Boston Pops and Assistant Principal Trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Steve Hendrickson, Principal of the National Symphony Orchestra; and the late William Fielder, Associate Professor of Trumpet at Rutgers University.
