Barbara Butler visits Florida State University

Nothwestern University Professor of Trumpet Barbara Butler was in residence at Florida State University on November 13 and 14, 2012.

During Butler’s visit she taught three master classes, presented a lecture to music majors, and performed a solo with the Florida State University Wind Orchestra.

Professor Butler discussed several key points while working with FSU trumpet majors in master classes, one being the importance of having a musical plan and playing musical statements. She described the significance of long phrases and making sure all notes sound as if they are either leading or arriving. On the technical side, Butler discussed the concept of always using fast air and explained low notes should have fast air similar to high notes, which sets up the trumpeter to stay in the same “gear” while playing through all ranges of the instrument. In addition, some other topics discussed were healthy trumpet playing, breathing, and hand position for low F.

On the second day of the residency, FSU music majors attended Butler’s lecture where she discussed four things that are important to “making it:” organizing practice, and what successful students have in common. In the evening, Professor Butler performed Anthony Plog’s Concerto with brass members of the FSU Wind Orchestra.
