Players from the US, Canada, England, and Portugal came together at Anderson University in South Carolina for the Purtle.com Brass Camp, which took place on July 16th and 17th, 2010. The camp helped both younger and older players in their development as brass musicians through offering guest artist performances, sessions on playing and instruments, and the opportunity to play in ensembles. Guest artists included Susan Slaughter, principal trumpeter of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and Harry Kim, lead trumpeter with American Idol, studio musician, and former lead trumpeter of the Harry James Orchestra. These two each gave concerts: Susan Slaughter with the Monarch Brass, and Harry Kim with a jazz ensemble.
Over the course of the camp, each guest artist discussed playing, performance, and career issues. Other artist clinicians ran sessions, as well. Jeff Purtle presented a clinic on Claude Gordon’s method and its different aspects. Dr. Keith Amstutz discussed the tongue and how it works in brass playing. Joe Marcinkiewicz discussed trumpet and mouthpiece construction, and Rich Ita gave a lecture on the evolution of the trumpet from a post horn to the modern trumpet and cornet.
