II Ubirani International Trumpet Festival

The second Ubirani International Trumpet Festival took place in Joao Pessoa in the state of Paraiba on July 18 – 21, 2016.

This year’s festival was dedicated to the teaching of Charles Schlueter, a musician who inspired and influenced generations of artists and teachers in Brazil. With six faculty and nearly one hundred college, high school, and middle school students, the festival has become a tradition in the northeast of Brazil attracting students from all over the country and other countries.

The festival included sessions and activities for all levels of students, offering those in attendance a variety of opportunities, to attend masterclasses, warm-up sessions, and enjoy daily performances by master trumpet players and local music ensembles.

Guest artists included Charles Schlueter, former principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Alan Siebert, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music; Nailson Simoes, University of Rio de Janeiro; Ayrton Benck, Federal University of Paraiba; Joatan Nascimento, Federal Univerisity of Bahia; and Ranilson Faria, Federal Univeristy of Rio Grande do Norte. The festival also starred five ensembles that featured the faculty – Orquestra de Meatus e Percussão da Paraiba; Jerimum Jazz Big Band; Bacalhoada Choro; Banda de música da cidade de Joao Pessoa; and Orquestra Sinfonica Jovem da Paraiba.

The festival highlights include the presentation of the official ITG chapter from the hands of former ITG President, Alan Siebert, to an audience of almost a thousand people; and the Ubirani Teaching Excellence Award to Charles Schlueter for all his dedication to the Brazilian Trumpet community.
