Fall 2013 at the University of Louisville

The University of Louisville hosted Stanley Friedmann, Vincent DiMartino, John Rommel, and Don Johnson in Fall 2013.

On September 20, 2013, trumpet artist and composer Stanley Friedmann gave a master class of his own music and coached students on his Sonata and Solus.  A few days later on September 25, Vincent DiMartino presented a class on historic instruments at the University of Louisville. Instruments included were a Fiske piston action rotary cornet (1868,) a Conn pocket cornet (1920), a Boosey echo cornet (1920), a King mini-trumpet (1930s,) a King Liberty trumpet (1930s,) a Conn NY Wonder cornet (1899,) a Holton slide cornet and a Besson Bb cornet, a Pask-Koenig Model Cornopean (1948,) a Courtois Levy Presentation model cornet (1878,) a York Airflow trumpet (1930s,) an over-the-shoulder Bb cornet circa 1870, and a Pollmann top action rotary valve Eb cornet circa 1875.


In an October 17 ceremony, John Rommel, Professor of Trumpet at Indiana University, was awarded the 2013 Alumni Fellow Award of the University of Louisville School of Music. As a part of the award Rommel presented a master class for U of L students on October 18, coaching Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, John Williams' Concerto for Trumpet, and Brandt's Concertpiece No. 2. The Alumni Fellow Award is the highest honor the University of Louisville Alumni Association bestows.

On October 21, Don Johnson presented a lecture recital on October. Accompanied by University of Louisville Professor Jack Ashworth on piano, he performed the first movement of the Haydn Concerto on a keyed bugle, Arban’s Carnival of Venice on an echo bell cornet, Arban’s Norma on a Civil War rotary Eb cornet, and Witt’s Sonata a 7 on baroque trumpet.
