In Memoriam: James Dempsey (1950-2022)

ITG mourns the passing of trumpeter, James Dempsey.

Dempsey was born August 28, 1950, in Kylsyth, Scotland. He immigrated to Australia where he studied in Queensland and performed in the Queensland Youth Orchestra. He was appointed to the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until his retirement. He went on to become head of the brass department at the University of Adelaide and music director of the Tanunda town band. Tanunda is often regarded as the birthplace of brass band music in Australia.

He passed on May 8, 2022. Dempsey is survived by his wife Sheila, and was known as a devoted family man.
