In Memoriam: Pierre Dutot (1946–2021)

The International Trumpet Guild mourns the passing of French trumpet player Pierre Dutot.

The famed trumpet performer and great French pedagogue was born on June 11, 1946 and passed away on August 24, 2021.

Pierre Dutot could have chosen a career in sports, having graduated in physical education and psychology, but after having obtained a First Prize at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris, chose a musical path.

He was, among other things, Professor for 22 years at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon, as well as a member of the Orchestre National de Lyon. He participated in numerous recordings and travelled the world with his brass ensemble Hexagone. 

With a boundless generosity, Pierre Dutot has transmitted his passion for the trumpet throughout his life. He was one of the most influential and sought-after teachers, training students on all continents. Among the many talents who have worked with him are: David Guerrier (1st Prize at the Munich ARD International Competition), André Henry (1st Prize at the Geneva International Competition), Pascal Clarhaut (Solo Trumpet of the Paris Opera Orchestra), Eric Planté (Solo Trumpet of the Orchestras of the Garde Républicaine) and countless other soloists, orchestral musicians and teachers throughout the world.

His passion for transmitting his knowledge has led him to write or publish a large number of methods that have led to the composition of many works for our instrument.

His generosity led him to give master classes and concerts, notably in Lège Cap Ferret, near Bordeaux (France), a region he particularly loved and where he lived with his family for several years. He was a force of nature, he loved life, people, he will leave a great void. ITG sends its sincere condolences to his family and friends.
