ITG Affiliate Chapter Event: São Paulo Trumpet Academy

The Sao Paulo Trumpet Academy (SPTA) promotes the exchange between teachers of American universities and the Brazilian trumpet students. Founded in 2017, the SPTA is organized in São Paulo, Brazil by the ITG Chapter São Paulo Trumpet Guild and its organizers Otávio Nestares, Bruno Garcia Fermiano, Felippe Freire, and Marcos Braga.

The fourth edition was held at Fabrica de Cultura in Sao Paulo, Brazil, January 23-26th. The international guest artists included Morris Northcutt (Vincent Bach artist) and Dr. Scott Belck (Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music). On Thursday, Jan. 23, Dr. Belck lead a warm-up session and then presented a clinic about his daily trumpet routine. In the afternoon, Marcos Braga taught a master class about improvisation. Morris Northcutt taught a repertoire class and Bruno Garcia taught a flexibility class for the beginner students' class. This was followed by a clinic about flexibility led by Scott Belck for the advanced students. Otavio Nestares taught a clinic about Bill Adam Routine for the intermediate students and Wellington dos Santos led a Scale class for the beginner students. Later, trumpet ensemble rehearsals were led by Rogerio Froes, Wellington dos Santos, and Wagner Felix.

On Friday, Jan. 24, Wagner Felix led a warm-up session for the intermediate-advanced class and Wellington dos Santos worked on with the beginner students. In the afternoon, Morris Northcutt presented his clinic “Honesty in the Practice Room.” Wellington dos Santos presented a clinic for the intermediate students and Pedro Santos taught a class for the beginner students. After that, Scott Belck presented a clinic about his approach to trumpet playing.

On Saturday, Jan. 25, Thiago Araujo presented a class “How to be good on trumpet when you are a part-time trumpet player.” Wellington dos Santos worked with the beginner students. Following that, Scott Belck taught a class about high range. In the afternoon, Walmir Gil led an Improvisation class. After that, Morris Northcutt worked with the intermediate-advanced students on fundamentals. This was followed by the trumpet ensembles rehearsals.

On Sunday, Jan. 26th, Amarildo Nascimento presented a lecture on respiration. Morris Northcutt worked with advanced students on solo repertoire. In the afternoon, Morris Northcutt and Scott Belck performed a concert with the Freedom Big Band.
