2019 University of Kentucky Summer Trumpet Institute

The University of Kentucky (UK) hosted the third annual Summer Trumpet Institute (UKSTI) June 10-13, 2019, in Lexington, KY.

Over 70 trumpeters from around the United States attended this four-day residential camp. The event was hosted and directed by Jason Dovel, associate professor of trumpet at UK. The camp was largely held in Holmes Hall, UK's arts living-learning residential facility, with additional events in the Singletary Center for the Arts and Fine Arts Building.

In addition, campers could choose from specialized classes in solo performance, jazz improvisation, Baroque (natural) trumpet, and orchestral excerpts. Daily performance opportunities included trumpet ensemble rehearsals and open, performance based masterclasses. Major concerts included a jazz night (Monday) featuring Jens Lindemann, Vince DiMartino, Josh Reed, Gabriel DiMartino, and the UK faculty jazz trio, two faculty gala recitals featuring all faculty members (Tuesday and Wednesday), and a closing concert (Thursday) featuring trumpet ensembles made up of all camp participants.

New in 2019 was also the inaugural Junior Trumpet Institute for 6th through 8th grade students. Participants were coached by UKSTI faculty and staff members on fundamentals, jazz, and in the junior trumpet ensemble. Participants also enjoyed musical and recreational activities each day, then joined the senior institute in the evenings for faculty recitals. Jenna Veverka served as coordinator for the junior camp as well as assistant director for UKSTI.
