Oswaldo Zapata to UTSA

Oswaldo Zapata has been appointed Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he will begin in Fall 2019.

Dr. Zapata comes to UTSA from Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) in Laredo, TX, where he was the Assistant Professor of Music - Trumpet and Director of Mariachi. He is also the principal trumpet of the Laredo Philharmonic, and regularly performs in a wide variety of musical settings, including solo performances, wind ensemble, symphony orchestra, trumpet ensemble, brass quintet, and Latin ensembles.

Oswaldo Zapata

Dr. Zapata is originally from Caldas, Antioquia, Colombia (near Medellín), where he began his musical journey by playing the trumpet in the town band.  He has studied trumpet under Prof. Fernando Parra, Prof. James Ackley, Allen Vizzutti, and Prof. David Hickman. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance with an emphasis in Instrumental Pedagogy from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, a Certificate of Graduate Study in Music Performance and a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of South Carolina, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in performance from Arizona State University. While at ASU, he was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for both the mariachi program and the trumpet studio. Dr. Zapata lives with his wife, Sarah, and their son, James.
