In Memoriam: Carl "Doug" Zimmerman (1940-2018)

Long-time ITG member Carl “Doug” Zimmerman passed away on October 1, 2018, at the age of 78.

Doug was a retired Army Reserve Officer, retired Public School Teacher, collegiate athlete and trumpet player. One of his trumpet dreams was fulfilled when he performed at several ITG Conferences (Denver, Rowan, and Grand Rapids) as a member of The ETSU Trumpet Ensemble. He also got to perform in front of the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, with Doc Severinsen (Night of a Thousand Trumpets), ETSU Jazz Ensemble, and with Allen Vizzutti (ETSU Jazz Concert Trumpet Ensemble). Doug made sure ETSU trumpet students all had what they needed - whether a professional trumpet or funding for numerous trips to ITG Conferences and NTC Competitions.

Doug attended almost every ITG Conference for the past 20 years.  His sponsorship was long and varied, including numerous trumpet guest artist appearances, scholarships, instruments, mentorship, and the new ETSU Trumpet Studio Office which is co-named after Dr. George Winton and himself. He played in the ETSU Concert Band every semester for over 20 years, Veterans Brass, Selah Brass, Central Baptist Orchestra, and the Johnson City Community Concert Band. Doug studied trumpet with Dr. David Champouillon for many years. Doug was the supreme role model and mentor for all and studied trumpet weekly up until a few weeks before his death.
