São Paulo Jazz Trumpet Festival

The fifth edition of Brazil's Jazz Trumpet Festival (JTF) was held in October 2017 in São Paulo, Brazil. The event was organized by was organized by the São Paulo Trumpet Guild, an ITG Affiliate Chapter.

This year's artist lineup included Eric Miyashiro, Rex Richardson, Tanya Darby, Trent Austin, Mike Vax, Charlie Porter, Silverio Pontes, and Joatan Nascimento. More than 260 trumpet players attended the event. The JTF was hosted by Santa Marcelina College. There were thirteen exhibitors, including Yamaha, Warburton, Adams, Edwards, Conn-Selmer, Pickett Brass and others.

On Monday, October 23, Joatan Nascimento gave a master class about Brazilian music. In the afternoon, Anor Luciano taught a class about music style and coached student participants. That evening, Clovis Beltrami & Trompetando performed a prelude before the main concert. Silverio Pontes performed with an ensemble from São Paulo. In addition, Joatan Nascimento & Jurufrevo Big Band performed Brazilian music.

On Tuesday, October 25, Edmilson Gomes led a morning warm-up session. Charlie Porter gave the first masterclass of the day about trumpet playing concepts. In the afternoon, Silverio Pontes taught a class about the Brazilian music style choro. Later that day, American trumpeter Trent Austin gave an enthusiastic class about improvisation. That evening, Eric Miyashiro & Speakin’ Jazz Big Band performed a concert with Tanya Darby as special guest.

On Wednesday, October 26, Edilson Nery led a morning warm-up session. After that, Eric Miyashiro gave a workshop about his career and approach to the trumpet. In the afternoon, Rich Nichols taught a class about how to learn a new tune and improvise. Following Nichols, Mike Vax gave a master class. Torelli Musical presented their new mutes line. That evening, Julian Lupu, Thein artist, coached a trumpet ensemble in the Prelude. And then, Charlie Porter & Soundscape Big Band performed a jazz concert.

On Thursday, October 27, Michel Machado led a morning warm-up session. Later, Tanya Darby presented a fun class about jazz style. In the afternoon, Dr. Paulo Ronqui performed a workshop-recital about brass instruments performance at Unicamp University. Following him, Julian Lupu presented a master class-recital about classical trumpet style. That evening, Altair Martins conducted a trumpet ensemble performing Fired Up! (Bill Adam’s tribute) in the Prelude. Rex Richardson And Tanya Darby played the main concert with Freedom Big Band.

On Friday, October 28, Roger Brito led a morning warm-up session, followed by a master class by Rex Richardson. In the afternoon, Trent Austin gave another master class. Following Austin, Rubinho Antunes taught a class about improvisation. Altair Martins coached a jam session. In the closing concert, a female trumpet ensemble performed two pieces in the Prelude. In the closing concert, Mike Vax and Trent Austin performed with Banda Urbana.

The Jazz Trumpet Festival (JTF) is an event focused in jazz and commercial music. Founded in 2013, the JTF is organized in São Paulo, Brazil by the ITG Chapter - São Paulo Trumpet Guild: Otávio Nestares, Bruno Garcia Fermiano, Felippe Freire e Marcos Braga. At previous festivals, JTF has received international artists as Eric Miyashiro, Jon Faddis, Bobby Shew, Adam Rapa, Allen Vizzutti, Thomas Gansch, Byron Stripling, Greg Gisbert and Yturvides Vilchez.
