J. Peyden Shelton to University of Utah

Dr. J. Peyden Shelton has been appointed to the University of Utah as Assistant Professor of Trumpet.

He comes to the University of Utah having served on the faculties of the University of Rochester and Cornell University as Lecturer of Trumpet. In 2014, Dr. Shelton was awarded first prize at the National Trumpet Competition’s Graduate Soloist Division, performing Joseph Turrin’s Concerto for Trumpet. Since that time, he has been featured as a soloist with various groups including the Reston Symphony Orchestra, the Cornell Wind Ensemble, the Winds of the Blue Ridge, and the Eastman Brass Ensemble. In addition to his solo work, Dr. Shelton has performed with many ensembles around the country including the Rochester Philharmonic, the Syracuse Symphoria, Baltimore’s new music ensemble, Symphony Number One, and the New World Symphony.  Dr. Shelton serves on the Music Review staff for the International Trumpet Guild Journal.  

He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with James Thompson. He also holds degrees from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and Virginia Tech, having studied with Craig Morris and Dr. John Adler, respectively. Dr. Shelton is a Stomvi Flex Mouthpiece Artist and Torpedo Bag Professional Artist.
