James Madison University will be offering a graduate teaching assistantship in music performance (lead trumpet emphasis) beginning in the Fall of 2010. It is not structured along the traditional, highly specialized lines of a typical Graduate Jazz Studies Lead Trumpet award. JMU does not currently have a graduate degree in Jazz Studies. Instead, we have an innovative MM/DMA in Performance/Pedagogy and Literature that is structured to prepare students for university teaching.

Students can enroll in the joint MM/DMA degree program, or at the DMA level. We also have MM programs in performance, conducting, music education, composition, and a traditional DMA program in conducting, performance, and composition. The lead trumpet assistantship is available to applicants in any of these programs.

2010 assistantships include a full tuition waiver and a $14,500.00 stipend. Opportunities exist to gain supervised experience directing the second Jazz Ensemble, coaching undergraduate combos, and teaching one section in our Jazz Improvisation sequence. Opportunities for jazz study include applied jazz improvisation with Dave Pope, Andy Connell, or Wells Hanley, lead trumpet performance practice with Chuck Dotas, and jazz arranging/composition and jazz classroom or studio pedagogy with Chuck Dotas and Dave Pope. Students will also have to opportunity to study Applied Trumpet with Dr. Chris Carrillo, and perform in the JMU Jazz Ensemble. The exact nature of a student's program of study and teaching is quite flexible allowing us to create a program suited to the needs and strengths of individual candidates.

Assistantships are competitive and early application is viewed favorably. Please feel free to view the JMU School of Music website (www.jmu.edu/music) to find out more information about our graduate programs. For more information, please contact:
