COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY -- Trumpet

Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a newly created tenure-track position in trumpet and jazz at the rank of Assistant Professor of Music, to begin in August, 2012.  QUALIFICATIONS:  Masters degree required.  The successful candidate must have a completed doctoral degree within six years of appointment, in order to be considered for promotion and tenure. Candidates must have record of success as a trumpet teacher (minimum two years at the collegiate level), and a record of success as a jazz and classical trumpet performer.  Knowledge of college teaching practice, advising, research/creativity expectations and service responsibilities is required. RESPONSIBILITIES:The primary responsibility of this position will be to recruit, teach, and offer regular studio classes to trumpet majors and minors (primarily classical), as well as to teach courses within the jazz area.  Possible courses include Big Band & Combos, Arranging/Composition, Jazz Improvisation, Brass Methods, or Brass Chamber Music. The specific assignments will be determined by the needs of the department and the strengths and interests of the candidate.  Additional duties may be assigned commensurate with the candidate’s expertise and the department’s curricular, service, and community outreach needs, including participating in performances with the jazz faculty and other departmental collaborations.  Coastal Carolina University is a public mid-sized, comprehensive liberal arts-oriented institution. TARLETON STATE UNIVERSITY -- Trumpet.

Primary duties include teaching trumpet to undergraduate music majors and minors, assist the Department Head and Director of Bands in recruiting and retention efforts, give faculty performances, recitals, and clinics appropriate to the discipline, advise music majors, and serve on university and departmental committees. UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY -- Assistant Professor, Trumpet

Position Summary: The Utah State University Music Department invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of trumpet to head its high brass program.

The Department of Music is administered by the Caine College of the Arts, and has 27 full-time faculty members serving over 300 music majors. Housed in the Chase Fine Arts Center Complex, departmental facilities include teaching/rehearsal space, facultyoffices, the 2,000-seat Kent Concert Hall, and the award-winning 400-seat Manon Caine Russell Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall dedicated in January of 2006. The Jazz Ambassadors of The United States Army Field Band is the Department of the Army's official touring jazz orchestra. Since its formation in 1969, this 19-member big band has received great acclaim both at home and abroad performing America's original art form, jazz.

U.S. Navy Band - TRUMPET

Concert/Ceremonial Band
Audition date:  January 30, 2012

The U.S. Navy Band is a preferentially staffed Presidential support activity whose members are permanently stationed at the Navy Yard in historic Washington, DC.  Members of the Navy Band are guaranteed advancement to pay grade E-6 after completion of basic training ($58,044/year with dependents; $51,240 without dependents) with a minimum enlistment of four years.  Musicians earn full military benefits including basic pay, free medical and dental coverage, allowances for housing, food, and uniforms, thirty days annual vacation with pay, no lost time for sickness, free medical care and low-cost dental care for dependents, inexpensive group life insurance, commissary and exchange privileges, and tuition assistance.

Audition requirements maintain that you be a U.S. citizen aged 18 to 34, pass the Armed Forces Entrance Physical, and be otherwise qualified for service in the U.S. Navy.  Current military members and some veterans may be exempt from the age requirement.  The Navy and Navy Band have strict appearance and weight standards.  Each candidate will be weighed and measured prior to auditioning for the U.S. Navy Band.  Additionally, musicians who are hired must conform to weight and appearance requirements prior to enlistment.  Audition materials will not be returned, and all expenses and travel arrangements are the sole responsibility of the candidate.  Upon winning the audition, the candidate must enlist in the Navy and complete basic training before appointment to the U.S. Navy Band.

Scholarships and Assistantships


The Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University announces Graduate Assistantships in trumpet, trombone, horn and tuba starting in August of 2011. Graduate assistants are to play in the Blackwelder Brass, a graduate brass quintet with duties that include outreach concerts, university events and church residencies. Graduate assistants are also expected to play in other university ensembles as assigned. The winners of these positions will receive a full-tuition scholarship (does not include fees), modest monthly stipends and added pay for performing in churches on weekends. Additional work is available teaching private lessons and
freelancing in Oklahoma City.

The Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University is renowned for its exceptional training of musicians in the liberal arts tradition. For 80 years, its graduates have been in demand as singers, conductors, composers, instrumentalists, educators, critics and commentators.

School of Music alumni include Grammy, Tony, and Emmy Award winners. The Wanda L. Bass Music Center, a $31.5 million, 117,000-square-foot addition more than doubles the size of the Bass School of Music. The School of Music at The University of Southern Mississippi announces a Graduate Teaching Assistantship in Trumpet beginning in August, 2012.  This position is available to both DMA and MM applicants.  It is renewable for a second year assuming the student is making satisfactory progress.

Duties: The Graduate Teaching Assistant will teach undergraduate applied trumpet lessons, perform as a member of the Southern Arts Faculty Brass Quintet, coach student chamber ensembles, and perform other administrative duties within the trumpet studio as assigned by the professor.

Benefits: $7,200 stipend paid over 9 months (September-May), tuition waivers for both in-state and out-of-state tuition (fees not included), and health insurance.
 
SOUTHERN MISS SCHOOL OF MUSIC

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music has a longstanding international reputation for musical excellence.  Serving more than 450 music majors from the United States and 15 countries, the school maintains a strongly diverse student population.

GRADUATE TRUMPET ASSISTANTSHIP:  There are two graduate trumpet assistantships available at the University of Georgia beginning in the Fall of 2012.  The primary responsibilities of the assistantships are playing in the Bulldog Brass Quintet, a fully funded graduate brass quintet.  Additional duties may be assigned as needed.  The assistantships come with full tuition and a stipend around $10,500 (slightly more for doctoral candidates).  The application deadline for graduate studies at University of Georgia is December 1st, which includes an audition CD/DVD containing the following:  2 contrasting solos with piano (this can be a live performance from a recent recital), a Charlier Etude of your choice, and Mahler 5 opening, Petrouchka Ballerina's Dance, and Pines of Rome off-stage solo.  Candidates will be selected from the CD/DVD screening for a live audition.

West Texas A&M University Department of Music Announces GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP in the area of TRUMPET For the 2012-2013 Academic year

QUALIFICATIONS:    
Bachelor’s degree in music and admission to the Graduate program at WTAMU.  Applicant must be a strong performer.

DUTIES:    
Perform in the Faculty Brass Quintet.  The Quintet performs recitals twice a year on campus and at various university and community functions.  The Quintet also usually schedules one performance tour each year.  Additional duties could include performing in the WTAMU Symphonic Band and the WTAMU Symphony Orchestra and assisting in the applied studio, studio classes, and chamber music ensembles.  Other duties based on qualifications.

SCHOLARSHIP/ STIPEND:    
Scholarship would include out-of-state tuition waiver. Stipend is $10,000 for a 9-month appointment.  Assistantship award is renewable for second year.  Additional income is possible through teaching privately and freelancing in Amarillo, a city of 190,000 with a strong support for the arts.  The chosen candidate would also be utilized as assistant principal trumpet with the Amarillo Symphony, on a per-service compensational basis.

AUDITION:    
Applicants are encouraged to audition on campus by April 9, 2012.  Audition could include a solo, etudes, and orchestral excerpts of the applicant’s choice, scales (major and minor) and sight reading.  Audition will also include a rehearsal with the faculty brass quintet. Repertoire for this rehearsal will be distributed to applicants.

DEGREES OFFERED: Master of Arts in Music with Recital, Thesis, or Non-Thesis options, and Master of Music in Performance.

FACULTY:
Dr. William Takacs, trumpet, (BM in trumpet performance from West Chester University, MM in trumpet performance from Bowling Green State University, DM in trumpet performance from Florida State University) is principal trumpet of the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with the Amarillo Opera.  Dr. Takacs was the winner of the Graduate Division of the 1999 National Trumpet Competition and was one of five semifinalists chosen worldwide to compete in the 2000 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Competition.

Announcing a graduate assistantship opening at OHIO UNIVERSITY, Athens

Position:  2nd trumpet in OhioBrass, the resident faculty brass quintet in the O.U. School of Music.  The other four members are full time brass faculty members.  The graduate assistantship also involves teaching applied lessons to freshman trumpet majors, and teaching all trumpet music minors.

Beginning:  Fall, 2012

Stipend/waiver:  All in or out-of-state tuition is waived, and the stipend is competitive (usually around $8,000 per year).  Additional income is possible through supplemental teaching and free lancing in the area.

University of Iowa Teaching Assistant in Trumpet: anticipated opening beginning Fall 2012.

The assistantship will involve teaching non-majors, teaching the trumpet portion of Instrumental Techniques to Music Education students, and coaching chamber music.

The work will not exceed 10 hours/week. For the 2012-2013 academic year, the assistantship will include a monthly stipend and a tuition scholarship based upon full time enrollment.

Graduate Assistantship in Trumpet at Illinois State University

The Illinois State University School of Music announces a Trumpet Studio Graduate Assistantship Vacancy and Graduate Tuition Waivers for Trumpeters for Fall 2011-2012. Stipend from $3825.00 up to $7,650 a year for a 10/20 hour week assistantship depending on assignment.  In addition, graduate tuition, (estimated $11,000.00 yearly) is waived and health insurance provided at no cost. The assistantship is a renewable award. In addition to performing 2nd trumpet in the ISU Faculty Brass Quintet, other duties may include instruction of studio/studio overload during faculty tours, assisting with Trumpet Ensemble and Master Class, performing with the graduate brass quintet, coaching student chamber ensembles, classroom teaching, audio recording, or other duties according to the candidate's abilities and interest and School of Music needs.  

Required Qualifications: All applicants must have a GPA of 3.0.  International applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 79 (internet-based), 213 (computer-based), or 550 (paper test).  Furthermore, international applicants must have a minimum speaking score of 23 on the TOEFL internet-based test OR submit/have a passing score in the Test of Spoken English (TSE) prior to arrival on campus.

Michigan State University -- Opening for a Graduate Assistant

The position is a 'performing assistantship' and would involve performing in a graduate brass quintet and playing in our Symphony Orchestra or Wind Symphony for an average of ten hours service per week. It can also include teaching some undergraduate students as needed, but the load cannot exceed ten hours per week. 

The monthly stipend for the position is dependent on the applicant's experience, but would be at least $600 per month. Full time tuition is paid for as well as any fees. Plus, health insurance is included as is a parking permit.

While a doctoral student would be preferred in this position, a highly qualified masters student would be considered.

Doctoral auditions are thirty minutes long and should include some discussion about the music and/or composers involved. These auditions should include a wide variety of literature and may include orchestral excerpts as well as solo pieces. Accompanists are recommended, but not required. (Electronic media are acceptable as well.) A live audition is required for consideration for the assistantship.

Masters level auditions are twenty minutes long and should also include a wide range of literature. (No discussion of the music is required.) These must also be performed live.

The Ohio State University School of Music announces an expected vacancy for a Graduate Teaching Associate in trumpet beginning in August 2012.  Duties may include teaching the brass methods course, applied teaching, performing in University ensembles, conducting/rehearsing the OSU Trumpet Ensemble, and other duties as assigned.  This position currently pays approximately $13,000 yearly plus a full tuition waiver.  Previous GTA’s in this position have gone on to successful careers in symphony orchestras, military bands, and university teaching positions throughout the country.
