Jazz Studies

JACKSONVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY--Jazz

Job Title: Visiting Inst/Asst Prof-Jazz Studies

Visiting Instructor/Assistant Professor, full-time nine-month appointment. Direct jazz studies program and teach undergraduate jazz students. Teaching responsibilities depend upon candidate's areas of expertise and department needs. Duties include conducting large and small ensembles, improvisation and applied lessons also participate in auditions and recruitment efforts. Principal instrument may include guitar, trumpet or woodwinds.

If hired at Assistant Professor level, doctorate in music required. If hired as Instructor, master's degree in Music required. Two years of professional jazz experience required.

Start Date: August 20, 2010

Military Positions


THE UNITED STATES ARMY OLD GUARD FIFE AND DRUM CORPS -- BUGLE INSTRUMENTALIST

Audition July 29-30, 2010

General Audition Information

Established in 1960, the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is one of the United States Army 's premier bands. The Corps provides musical support to the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), the Army's official ceremonial unit and escort to the President of the United States. In addition to performances at the White House, Pentagon, and military events throughout the Nation's Capitol, the Fife and Drum Corps serves as a representative of the United States Army, regularly entertaining audiences at both national and international events.

The Bugle Instrumentalist position requires the exclusive use of a single valve B-flat bugle. In addition to performing with the corps, buglers provide support for military funerals.

Qualifications

Applicants must successfully complete/pass all U.S. Army prerequisites for entry into military service. Applicants must be between 18-42 years old, have no physical hindrance to marching or movement, and be capable of performing while marching without the aid of glasses or be able to wear contacts. Applicants must comply with active duty Army height and weight standards, not recruit entrance standards.  Candidates must also adhere to strict appearance guidelines, and be able to obtain a security clearance. The position requires a minimum 3-year enlistment, with notification of acceptance prior to enlistment.

Benefits

Upon completion of Initial Entry Training and advanced individual training within the Fife and Drum Corps, personnel are promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6), with an annual salary of $51,000 (no dependents) or $58,000 (with dependents). All members have a stabilized assignment at Fort Myer, and enjoy full military benefits including medical and dental care, group life insurance coverage, 30 days of annual paid vacation, Post Exchange and Commissary benefits, and educational benefits such as the Student Loan Repayment Program, and the Montgomery GI Bill.

URGENT. Lead trumpet openings onboard multiple cruise lines from early August for 4 months. Continuous openings thereafter. Strong sight-reading skills needed and must play comfortably up to an F or G. Scholarships and Assistantships


The Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University announces a Graduate Assistantship in Trumpet starting in August of 2009. Duties are to play in the Blackwelder Brass, a graduate brass quintet who's duties include outreach concerts, university events and church residencies. This graduate assistant will also be expected to play in the university orchestra, wind ensemble and pit orchestra. The winner of this position will receive a full-tuition scholarship and a modest monthly stipend and added pay for church work on weekends. Additional work is available teaching private lessons and freelancing in Oklahoma City.

The Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University is renowned for its exceptional training of musicians in the liberal arts tradition. For 80 years, its graduates have been in demand as singers, conductors, composers, instrumentalists, educators, critics and commentators. School of Music alumni include Grammy, Tony, and Emmy Award winners.

The recently opened Wanda L. Bass Music Center, a $31.5 million, 117,000-square-foot addition more than doubles the size of the Bass School of Music. The Bass Music Center features 60 additional practice rooms, 40 new teaching studios, seven high-tech music labs, six ensemble rehearsal rooms, and a black-box theater. The expansion incorporates new advances in sound isolation and acoustical breakthroughs.

Oklahoma City University offers MM degrees in performance, composition and conducting. The school is a full member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
