COMPETITION RULES AND REGULATIONS:

1. The Competition is open to all trumpeters born after January 1, 1978.
2. Completed applications for the competition must be received by July 10, 2008. The application must include:
a. A letter of application including full name, address, phone/fax number, e-mail, and nationality
b. A (non-refundable) application fee of $75 (USD); please make check payable to “International Trumpet Guild”
c. A one-page typed curriculum vitae
d. A copy of a document proving date of birth (passport, identity card, driver’s license, birth certificate, etc.)
e. A 5-inch x 7-inch (13 x 18 cm) or larger black and white photograph (for post-competition publicity of prize winners)
f. A compact disc recording of the works specified for Round 1 (see #5 below)
g. Management brochures (if available)
Incomplete or tardy applications will not be considered. An acknowledgement will be sent upon receipt of application materials.
3. The competition consists of six rounds. The first round will be judged on the basis of a recording (see #2f and #5), Rounds Two through Six will be carried out live in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts (see #6 – #10).
4. Prizes: $10,000 (First Prize), $5,000 (Second Prize). Both prizes will be awarded without division thereof.
5. Repertoire for Round One (recorded round):
G.P. Telemann, Concerto in D Major “di Melante” (Sikorski) (1st & 4th mvts.)
F.J. Haydn, Concerto in E flat (Universal Edition) (1st mvt. only)
Robert Henderson, Variation Movements (Western International) (2nd & 3rd mvts.)
Paul Hindemith, Sonate für Trompete und Klavier (Schott) (1st mvt only).
The indicated editions are to be used. The recording should be of the highest-quality fidelity and be unedited (i.e., individual movements may not contain splicing). Do not announce the contestant’s name, titles of works, etc. on the recording. Do not write the contestant’s name on the disc itself. All recordings will be numbered and judged anonymously.
6. A maximum of eight contestants will compete in Rounds Two and Three. A maximum of four semifinalists will be advanced to Rounds Four and Five. Two finalists will participate in Round Six. Participants in Round Two will be notified by July 1, 2008. After these are confirmed, other applicants will be notified.
7. Professional accompanists will be provided free of charge to contestants. Contestants who bring their own accompanists do so at their own expense. 90 minutes of rehearsal with piano and 90 minutes with organ will be scheduled for each contestant on Wednesday, October 8; 45 minutes of rehearsal in the Tsai Performance Center will be scheduled for each contestant on Thursday, October 9.
8. Repertoire for Rounds Two and Three:
Any selection from The Rafael Méndez Collection (Carl Fischer)
F.J. Haydn, Concerto in E flat (Universal Edition)
G.P. Telemann, Concerto in D Major “di Melante” (Sikorski)
Petr Eben, Okna (Windows) (Editio Bärenreiter Praha)
Round Two will be held in the Tsai Performance Center at Boston University; Round Three will be performed with organ at First Church in Cambridge, MA. All works will be performed in their entirety and in the indicated order. The Haydn and Telemann concerti must be performed from memory, and contestants shall play cadenzas of their own composition for the Haydn. Semifinalists will be announced shortly after the conclusion of Round Three.
9. Repertoire for Rounds Four and Five (Semifinal Rounds):
Robert Henderson, Variation Movements (Western International)
Paul Hindemith, Sonate für Trompete und Klavier (Schott)
Jan Krzywicki, Sonata for Trumpet and Piano (Leduc)
Rounds Four and Five will be held at the Tsai Performance Center at Boston University. All works will be performed in their entirety and in the indicated order; the Henderson work must be performed at concert pitch on C trumpet. Finalists will be announced during the evening recital on October 11.
10. Repertoire for Round Six (Final Round):
Richard Cornell, Concerted work for trumpet and orchestra commissioned by and for the 2008 Ellsworth Smith Competition
Round Six will be performed with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project at the Tsai Performance Center at Boston University. Rehearsal with orchestra for Round Six will take place at 10 A.M. on October 12. Solo parts and piano reductions of the score will be sent to all entrants in early June 2008.

11. General Remarks on Rounds Two through Six:
The indicated editions are to be used. The order of appearance for Rounds Two and Three will be determined by random assignment after all participants in Round Two are confirmed, and rehearsal and performance times for these rounds will be communicated shortly thereafter. Order of appearance for Semifinal and Final Rounds will be determined by the drawing of lots immediately after the announcements of participants in each. All rounds are open to the public. Spectators will be allowed to enter and exit the performance spaces only between performers. All contestants herewith agree to allow the Columbus Foundation, the ITG, Boston University, all competition sponsors, and the media to release postcompetition publicity which may include photographs. The winner of the First Prize will be invited to perform as a featured artist during the 2009 ITG Conference. If any part of the competition should be recorded in any way (including radio, TV and Internet), contestants herewith agree to perform without an additional fee.
12. The competition chair is in charge of the competition and may, in case of necessity or emergency, make decisions to adopt measures beneficial to the competition’s operation. Decisions by the competition judges for awards will be considered final.
