Finnish trumpeter Pasi Pirinen was awarded the $7,000 first prize at the 1998 Ellsworth Smith/ITG International Solo Trumpet Competition held October 23-25 at Ohio State University (OSU) in Columbus. Garth Greenup (USA) won the $4,000 second place prize. OSU assistant professor of trumpet William Campbell hosted the competition that included a group of phenomenal young trumpeters. Suffice it to say that those who gathered to witness these rising stars of the trumpet world were in trumpet heaven.

The competition weekend included a master class and performances from guest artists. First was a truly inspiring master class by Charles Daval, trumpet professor at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Daval performed the Ketting Intrada and worked with four OSU students on various solos and excerpts. He focused mostly on making music with the trumpet. Later that evening we were treated to a wonderful recital by Vincent DiMartino, professor of trumpet at Centre College, and Richard Cioffari, piano. Ease of playing and an exciting sound highlighted DiMartinoís performance. He performed the Kennan Sonata,Hansen Sonata, and Arutunian Concerto. William Campbell joined DiMartino for the Vivaldi Concerto for 2 Trumpets.

The semi-final round of the competition began the next morning with performances by Iskander Akmadullin (Tartastan, Russian Federation), Kale Cumings (USA), Luis Engelke (Brazil), Daniel Grantham (USA), Garth Greenup (USA), Tomohiro Naito (Japan), Pasi Pirinen (Finland), and Tristram Williams (Australia). First came performances of Telemann's Concerto in D Major and Persichettiís Parable. Four semi-finalists were accompanied by Patrick OíDonell, a member of the OSU music faculty. Later that day the semi-finalists performed Hummel's Concerto in E-flat and the Ewazen's Sonata. Each of the contestants performed consistently at a very high level, and the judges had a difficult task in choosing the four finalists: Grantham, Greenup, Naito, and Pirinen.

The first part of the final round began with Chaynes' Concerto and Persichetti's Parable. Each contestant seemed rested and performed extremely well. After a seven hour break the competition concluded with performances of Maxwell Davies' Sonata and the Brandt's Concertpiece No.1. After a 20-minute deliberation the judges announced the winners. ITG President Kim Dunnick awarded the $7,000 first prize to Pasi Pirinen (Finland), and the $4,000 second prize to Garth Greenup (USA). Pirinen is principal trumpet of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The finals judges were Charles Daval (chair), Vincent DiMartino, and Anthony Plog, trumpet professor at Freiburg Conservatory. The preliminary round judges were James Olcott, trumpet professor at Miami University of Ohio; Ed Reid, trumpet professor at the University of Arizona; and John Rommel, trumpet professor at Indiana University.

The competition was sponsored by the generous continued support of the Columbus Foundation through the Hellen Smith Trust in the name of her father, Ellsworth Smith, and the International Trumpet Guild.
