The Northlands Chapter of the International Trumpet Guild sponsored its first annual Northlands Trumpet Competition on March 5-6, 1999, hosted by Del Lyren of Bemidji State University. The two day event, held on the campus of BSU, involved a guest recital and clinic by Dr. Bret Jackson of Salt Lake City, Utah, in addition to the competition. A mass trumpet ensemble of 30 community members, and high school and university students opened the recital with Canterbury Flourish by Gordon Jacob. Dr. Jackson then performed works by Kent Kennan, Bruce Broughton, Franceschini, Hertel, and Fitzgerald.

The next morning the six finalists for the competition performed a prepared piece chosen from a list of Balay - Petite Piece Concertante, Ropartz - Andante et Allegro, Balay - Andante et Allegro, or Barat - Andante et Scherzo. A panel of judges selected finalists from submitted tapes. Finalists were Jake Morris (Maple Grove, MN), Erik Hasselquist (Stillwater, MN), Luke Schaefer (Minot, ND), Nick Wentworth (Gonvick, MN), Stephen Clements (Modesto, CA), and Brandon Jacque (Pelican Rapids, MN). Bret Jackson and Dr. Jeffrey Macomber, Director of Bands at Bemidji State University, served as judges for the final round. After extensive deliberation the judges selected Erik Hasselquist (1st place), Stephen Clements (2nd place), Luke Schaefer (3rd place), and Brandon Jacque (honorable mention).

Next year's Northlands Trumpet Competition will occur on March 24-25, 2000, with Vince DiMartino as the guest artist. This event will be sponsored in part by Yamaha Band Instruments and Eckroth Music of Moorhead, Minnesota.
