Toronto Symphony principal trumpet Andrew McCandless presented a master class/workshop at the University of Louisville School of Music on October 13, 1999. McCandless, a Louisville native, has performed with the Savannah and Kansas City Symphony Orchestras, the Buffalo Philharmonic, and most recently, the San Francisco Symphony as associate principal trumpet. McCandless presented a discussion titled It’s Just Four Things, referring to primary aspects of playing the trumpet and other brass instruments, including chops, air, mind, and music. According to McCandless, “playing the trumpet is a very difficult prospect in the best of times. When you think of what actually goes into playing, it’s amazing it gets done at all. We are pressing metal into some of the most delicate muscles of the body, while trying to force air into a tiny tube, as well as coordinating the tongue and fingers to make the proper sounds.”

McCandless worked with several University of Louisville trumpet students and closed with this thought: “One of my teachers once said that to be an artist it is also necessary to be an athlete. I believe that to be true. The most beautiful music cannot be appreciated unless it is performed, and that is always my final goal. No matter what the physical demands a piece of music may have, the end goal should always be the music we make.”
