John Irish has been appointed Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Angelo State University, San Angelo, Texas. In addition to his duties with the trumpet studio at ASU, he will direct the brass choir. Prior to this position, he taught trumpet at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio and at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas.

This new position follows a distinguished career in the Air Force Band system in which he performed in all fifty States, Canada, Mexico, and Western Europe. He has recorded with many bands, premiered new works for winds, soloed with bands and orchestras, and founded the Wright Brass while at the Air Force Band of Flight in Dayton, Ohio. His most recent position was with the USAF Heartland of America Band in Omaha, Nebraska where he was the Band Manager.

Irish has also performed with the Southwest German Radio Orchestra, the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, the Dayton Philharmonic, the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, and most recently, Mannheim Steamroller.

Contributing to the real-time technology assistance of the 1999 ITG Conference in Richmond, Virginia, Irish wrote a series of concert and master class reviews which were published in the September, 1999 Journal. He has previously written record reviews and an article for the ITG Journal, and his latest article was written for the Newsletter of the International Women’s Brass Conference (July 1999) in which he addressed female trumpeters in the Baroque era.

Irish completed his DMA at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music where he studied with Alan Siebert. He earned the MM and BM degrees from the University of Texas at San Antonio and studied trumpet with John Carroll.
