The United States Air Force Band has announced that the Colonel George S. Howard Young Artist Competition, created in 1994, will alternate yearly between brass/percussion and woodwinds. The 2000 competition is for brass and percussion. The competition is named for Colonel Howard, the second commander and conductor of The U.S. Air Force Band, in honor of his many contributions to young musicians. The competition is open to all high school band instrumentalists in grades 10 through 12 who are U.S. citizens.
