The Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition, sponsored by the Herb Alpert Foundation and ITG, will be held November 12-13 in Chicago, Illinois. Activities will include a clinic at DePaul University by Laurie Frink on the Caruso teaching method, and a concert by the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble, directed by competition host Bob Lark, will feature performances by the judging panel.

The competition finals will be held at the Jazz Showcase, Chicago’s premier jazz club. All events are open to the public, with an admission charge for the final concert. Competition Finalists:

Avishi Cohen - currently studying at the Thelonius Monk Institute; finished in 3rd place in the 1997 Thelonius Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition; received the Israel-American Cultural Foundation scholarship in the years 1992-1999; received the Clark Terry Award (1998) and Lawrence and Alam Berk scholarship (1997) from the Berkklee College of Music; graduated from Berklee with a Bachelor's degree in Music Performance; teachers include Tiger Okoshi, Ken Cervanka, Charles Lewis, Greg Hopkins, and Rami Oren.

Thomas Marriott - a free-lance artist in Seattle, Washington, where he fronts his own jazz groups and is a member of the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra; he has eight recordings to his credit, including a recent release by The Marriott Jazz Quintet; performances with the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and Manhattan Transfer; (No teachers listed)

Michael Rodriguez - a student at The New School University in New York; awarded the IAJE Clifford Brown/Stan Getz arts award in 1997; awarded 1st place in the ITG Conference Jazz Competition, 1999; graduated from the New World School of the Arts High School; Member of the GRAMMY All-American High School Jazz Band in 1995 & 1997. (Does not list specific trumpet teachers).

Antonio Speranza - a member of of the U.S. Military Academy Band's "Jazz Knights" (West Point, NY); cites trumpeter Scott Wendholt as a mentor; a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music (Bachelor of Music).

Vance Thompson - Semi-finalist, 1997 Thelonius Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition; 1st place, ITG Conference Jazz Trumpet Competition, 1993; Winner, Down Beat magazine's award for Best Collegiate Jazz Arrangement, 1997; currently a free-lance artist in Knoxville, TN, where he leads a professional big band; Master of Music - Jazz Trumpet Performance from DePaul University, where he studied trumpet with Bob Lark, having earlier earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tennessee.
