The Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University hosted the fourth annual “Trumpet Day in Pittsburgh” on March 19, 2007. The event was hosted by Roger Sherman, adjunct professor of trumpet and Chair of the Brass Department at the university. The day opened with a welcome by Edward Kocher, Dean of the School of Music. Artists featured were Bernard Adelstein, retired principal trumpet with the Cleveland Orchestra and former professor of trumpet at Indiana University; Charles Lirette, co-principal trumpet with the Pittsburgh Symphony; and Sean Jones, principal trumpet with Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Lirette and Jones are Duquesne faculty members. “Trumpet Day in Pittsburgh” is hosted on a rotating basis between Duquesne University, Slippery Rock University, and Carnegie-Mellon University. Funding was provided by the Mary Pappert School of Music with an added chapter grant from the International Trumpet Guild.

There were 150 students and teachers in attendance. In addition to the three host schools, students and teachers came from Alderson-Broaddus College, West Virginia University, and the University of Akron.

Session preludes were presented by the Duquesne University Brass Quintet and Trumpet Ensemble – directed by Robert Sherman, The Alderson Broaddus Trumpet Ensemble – directed by Timothy DeWitt, and the Slippery Rock University Trumpet Ensemble directed by Courtney Geary, standing in for Stephan Hawk.

Mr. Adelstein presented two sessions: the first was a master class featuring seven students, and the second was a discussion of basic techniques of successful trumpet playing. Charles Lirette discussed embouchure and tone production in his presentation and Sean Jones lectured on and demonstrated expanded trumpet techniques.
