Following the death of its founder Bengt Eklund in March 2007, the Göteborg Brass Band has announced that it has ceased operations after twenty-five years. In a website statement, dated May 10th, the band explains that with its leader gone and facing “a shrinking market of brass players” it decided that this was the time for the band to stop. The meeting at which the decision was actually taken was on 24th February, and thus included Eklund himself as well as the board and members of the band.

As the statement puts it, “The 25-year long story of Göteborg Brass Band ends with Bengt Eklund - Bengt is Göteborg Brass Band and Göteborg Brass Band is Bengt and the band rise and fall with him.” The band’s last appearance, conducted by Nicholas Childs, was at the European Championships in Birmingham on May 5th. A CD recorded during the visit to England will be released during 2007 as a memory of and a tribute to the band and Bengt Eklund.
