Phil Smith, principal trumpet with The New York Philharmonic, was the guest soloist and clinician at The Great American Brass Band Festival, 2007. The festival took place June 7-10 in Danville, Kentucky. During the weekend event, Smith played two recitals with Joseph Turrin and performed solos with The Brass Band of Columbus and The Advocate Brass Band.

As the winner of the North American Brass Band Association Championship division in 2006, the Brass Band of Columbus was invited to present the festival’s Saturday evening feature performance. Joining them as soloist, Phil Smith held the audience captive with Clifton Williams’ Dramatic Essay, Steven Bulla’s Joshua Swings the Battle, and Joseph Turrin’s Escapade as well as Turrin’s arrangement of Gershwin’s Someone to Watch Over Me. Smith and the BBC were eagerly received by an appreciative audience of over 20,000 band enthusiasts.

A similarly huge audience greeted The Advocate Brass Band, with whom Smith performed Anderson’s Bugler's Holiday along with Gabriel and Vince DiMartino.

The recitals included many of the fine pieces Joe Turrin has written for Phil Smith. Smith was joined by his wife Sheila at both The Chautauqua Tea and The Community Church Service. Phil also played a recital at The American Band History Conference held at the festival. Among the the other pieces performed were Honegger’s Intrada, Ibert’s Impromptu and Barat’s Andante and Allegro.

As if not busy enough during this four-day event, Phil Smith gave a wonderful masterclass for young trumpet performers. He coached four college and high school students for almost two hours.

The Great American Brass Band Festival is hosted by Centre College and the Danville community and is attended by over 40,000 people each year. For more information on the 2007 festival and plans for June 12-15, 2008, please visit the festival’s website listed below.
