Natural and modern trumpet virtuoso Gabriele Cassone hosted an international
faculty of trumpeters, including Edward Carroll (CalArts and McGill University, director of the Chosen Vale International Trumpet Seminar), Andrea Giuffredi (Accademia Internazionale della Musica, Milano), Giancarlo Parodi (Conservatories of Ferrara and Frosinone), and Charles Schleuter (New England Conservatory, former principal trumpet Boston Symphony) at the fifth annual "Festival Fiati" for all wind and brass instruments, presented by the Conservatorio Guido Cantelli in Novara (Italy) from April 14th to May 16th with the support of Courtois and Besson.
In addition to evening concerts by faculty and students, including the fiendishly difficult Howarth arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition for brass ensemble featuring Novara Conservatory students, instruction was offered in topics including "Orchestra Passages and Solo Avant-garde Repertoire" (Carroll), "Warm-up Techniques" (Cassone), "360° Exploring Trumpet" (Giuffredi), "Basic and Advanced Technique, Study Methodology" (Parodi), and "Performance in Solo and Orchestra Repertoire" (Schlueter).
The Gomalan Brass Quintet (Marco Pierobon, also 1st trumpet of the S. Cecilia Orchestra, Roma; and Marco Braito, also 1st trumpet of the RAI orchestra in Torino) presented a masterclass for brass quintet and their wonderful concert in the Teatro Coccia in Novara concluded the festival.
