Spring 2007 was another busy semester for the University of North Texas trumpet department. Four prominent guest trumpet artists visited campus this semester, including Robert Murray, Richard Rulli, Anthony Plog and Ryan Anthony.
Dr. Robert Murray, trumpet professor at the University of Northern Colorado and UNT trumpet department alumnus, visited the University of North Texas on January 24 and presented a recital at the Wednesday trumpet departmental (the weekly meeting of UNT’s trumpet department). Murray discussed how his time at UNT exposed him to a large quantity of new music and impelled him to continue exploring new music upon leaving. His recital consisted of several interesting selections of lesser-known trumpet repertoire, including works by Ibert, Wilder, Takemitsu, Xanthoulis and Longinotti.
Dr. Richard Rulli, trumpet professor at the University of Arkansas, presented a recital at the trumpet departmental on February 21. Rulli was accompanied by Dr. Linda Beckman, associate professor of piano at John Brown University. Their recital consisted of works by Torelli, Anthony Plog, Dana Wilson, and Bitsch.
Anthony Plog, an internationally-acclaimed trumpeter and composer who currently lives in Germany, visited UNT on March 28 and presented a master class to the trumpet studio. During the master class, he coached students in performances of his own compositions. He coached undergraduate trumpet student Stephanie Lee on his very difficult Concerto No. 2 and also coached a UNT trumpet ensemble and graduate trombone quartet.
On April 4, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's acting principal trumpet, Ryan Anthony, presented a master class to the UNT trumpet department. During the master class, he discussed his career as an orchestral player as well as his years in the Canadian Brass. Several students participated in the master class, including Logan Place, who played Turrin's Caprice, Ben Shaffer, who played Turrin’s Intrada, and Elizabeth Peroutka and Kei Itoi, who both played Tomasi's Concerto.
