A Symposium for Musicians and Physicians will be held on Monday May
14th on Union Square in New York City (NYC). Hosted by the Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center, NYC, the symposium offers an interesting program throughout the day, from “Music as the Human Condition” and “Orthopaedic Treatment of Musicians – an Allegro Return to the Stage” through to “Preventive Practices and Performance Arts Medicine in Young Performers”, inter alia. The impressive eleven-member faculty includes experts in surgery and performing arts medicine alongside music therapy, substance abuse and related disciplines.
Joanne Loewy, Director of the Louis Armstrong Center, who will be presenting the welcome on May 14th, explains some of the background: “A large part of our work is treating musicians who suffer from overuse, chemical dependency, depression, focal dystonia etc.
We have been providing music therapy for patients at Beth Israel for twelve years. The Musicians’ Clinic is new and we are proud to be a haven for musicians in need of specialized medical care in NYC.” Trumpet players will be interested to note that one of the Louis Armstrong Center's Board members is Jon Faddis.
