Microtonal Projects Ltd have announced that they are sponsors of a new Microtonal Trumpet website, written by trumpet player Stephen Altoft and composer Donald Bousted.
The project centres around Bousted's 24 Microtonal Studies, a collection of progressive pieces in 24-, 48- and 19-divisions of the octave which are published as a book and recorded onto CD (both of which are available from www.tutti.co.uk). The book was edited and fingered by Altoft, and on the CD the pieces are performed by him.
The site’s authors summarize its content as follows:
- 5 years’ research into the microtonal trumpet presented as a free website
- Extensive fingering charts
- Interval Look-up Charts
- Instruction / Techniques / Tips / Theory / Podcasts / Repertoire List
- A manual for microtonal trumpet which includes studies, approaches, and theory in:
- Quarter-tones (24 divisions of the octave)
- Eighth-tones (48 divisions of the octave) and
- 19-divisions of the octave
In addition, the conversion of a standard 3-valve trumpet into a 4-valve microtonal instrument is described which doesn't involve a permanent modification of the original instrument. This allows trumpeters to convert their preferred instruments into microtonal trumpets in a matter of minutes and at minimum cost. Please visit the site for more information.
