Michael Sachs, principal trumpet of the Cleveland Orchestra and trumpet professor at the Cleveland Institute of Music, visited the University of North Texas November 7- 9, 2006 as a guest of UNT trumpet professor John Holt. During his visit to UNT, Sachs presented a master class at the Wednesday Trumpet Departmental, taught private lessons and presented a recital on November 9 in the UNT Concert Hall.

During the master class, Sachs discussed his performing career and described his path to the Cleveland Orchestra. He also coached UNT trumpet students. Undergraduate performance major Jordan Britt had the rare opportunity of being coached by Sachs on the John Williams Concerto, a work commissioned by The Cleveland Orchestra for Mr. Sachs. Sachs also discussed his practice habits and coached graduate student Remus Morosan in how to practice using the Arban’s book.

On the Thursday recital, Sachs played works including Britten’s Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury, Ketting’s Intrada, Concerto for Trumpet by Neruda, Sonata for Trumpet by Hindemith, Concerto for Seven Trumpets and Timpani by Altenburg and Sonata in D Major for two trumpets by Franceschini. Sachs was accompanied by UNT DMA piano performance student Ekaterina Chernaya. Professors Keith Johnson and John Holt joined Sachs on stage for the performance of the Fanfare of St. Edmundsbury and several students and faculty participated in the performance of the Altenburg.
