Assistant professor of trumpet Iskander Akhmadullin writes with a round-up of trumpet news items from the University of Missouri.
In November 2005, Iskander Akhmadullin, together with pianist Natalia Bolshakova visited Germany with several recitals and master-classes. They performed three recitals at music schools in Stuttgart, Radolfzell, and Wangen. The master-classes were held at the Musikhochschule Freiburg (for the trumpet studio of Prof. Anthony Plog) and the Musikhochschule Trossingen (for the students of Prof. Wolfgang Guggenberger). Prof. Guggenberger, author of the popular book Basics Plus, joined Iskander during the clinic at the Weberzunfthaus Wangen.
Vincent DiMartino held a mini-residence at MU in March 2006. At the recital he was joined by Professor Emeritus Betty Scott and Iskander Akhmadullin. During almost five hours- long master-class, Mr. DiMartino worked with several students addressing various aspects of trumpet playing and music making, and covering repertoire from baroque and classical era to the 20th century avant-garde and jazz.
Dr. Keith Winking, Trumpet Professor from Texas State University visited MU in April together with his colleagues, soprano Juli Wood and pianist Francis Webb. They presented a beautiful recital of mostly baroque music for trumpet and voice.
Dr. Betty Scott gave two master-classes for MU students in April and in September. During her clinics, Dr. Scott discussed the psychological side of the performance. She talked about various relaxation techniques, particularly the use of hypnosis.
In October 2006, brass faculty from the Oklahoma State University came to MU to give a recital. Three students had the opportunity to play for OSU Trumpet Professor Dr. Andrew Cheetham during his master-class.
