| Friedman (centre, holding piccolo) with Belmont Brass Quintet |
On November 5th and 6th 2006, Dr. Stanley Friedman was a guest artist of the trumpet studio at Belmont University. The composer/trumpeter was in Nashville to perform with the Belmont Brass Quintet and address the brass and trumpet students at Belmont University.
Friedman met with composition students, and discussed with them his compositional process and played excerpts of his music. He then met with the brass students in the afternoon during their weekly brass seminar. During his presentation, he performed two movements of his Solus, another one of his new solo compositions (published in his recent etude book), and discussed composition, embouchure care, choice of instruments, and performing.
The day culminated in the evening performance of the Belmont Brass Quintet. The program included works by Balmages, Barber, Fillmore, Gabrieli, Godwin, Handel, Scheidt, and concluded with Friedman's own tone-poem, La Pittura. The latter piece, scored for brass quintet and solo trumpet, is a modern tour-de-force and was powerfully performed by the ensemble, and the composer performed the solo part adeptly and with immense grace and power. The piece received a standing ovation by the audience, an excellent indicator that his visit and his music were much appreciated by all!
