Morgan at the conclusion of his recital |
Welsh trumpet player Huw Morgan was winner of the 2005 ITG Solo Competition in Bangkok, and went on to win the brass division of the BBC's Young Musician of the Year competition for 2006. He is now a student of James Watson at the Royal Academy of Music, London. One result of Morgan’s placing as a BBC Young Musician finalist was a concert at the Wigmore Hall, London. The Wigmore Hall is a well-known starting point for many solo careers, indeed performing there functions almost as a rite of passage for many young players.
Morgan’s solo recital took place on 2nd November 2006. He presented an exciting and widely varied programme:
- Fasch Trumpet Concerto in D major
- Ravel ‘Kaddisch’ from Deux mélodies hébraïques
- Georges Enescu Légende
- Takemitsu Paths
- Jean Francaix Sonatine
- Gershwin, arr. Turrin Someone to Watch Over Me
- Luke Burke Thought Fragments (world première)
- Arban Variations on a Theme from Bellini’s ‘Norma’
The recital was notable not only for Morgan’s consummate musicianship and impressive variety of tone and approach, but also for his incredible endurance. I was amused to find this on Morgan’s blog, written several months before the November concert, and discussing its planning: “It will come as no surprise that my main difficulty has been the question of stamina versus challenging pieces.” Well actually yes, having seen the Wigmore concert it does indeed come as a surprise, because it appears that Morgan simply has no endurance issue. He just went on delivering impeccable performances throughout this highly challenging programme. From his daring performance of the Fasch, through his warm, glowing tone at the start of the Enescu and his light, graceful approach to the Francaix, to his outrageously good triple-tonguing in the Arban, this was a recital to remember.
