Dr. H.M. Lewis, Professor of Music at Georgetown College, Kentucky, was the guest of the trumpet studio at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. On October 3rd Lewis presented a lecture recital on the development of cornet design from the Civil War era to the mid-20th century. He skillfully demonstrated the differences in cornet design (and the resulting differences in timbre) by playing portions of cornet solos and orchestral excerpts on a wide range of more than twenty instruments taken from his vast personal collection, including such horns as an Eb "leader" saxhorn and antique cornets by Holton, Couturier, Bach, and many remarkable examples of the variety of instruments made by C.G. Conn.
On October 4th, Lewis performed with the Belmont University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Gary Schallert in an outdoor concert. The ensemble performed works by Leonard Bernstein, John Cheetham, George Gershwin, Shelley Hanson, Claude T. Smith, and Franz von Suppé. Lewis performed a beautifully agile rendition of J.O. Brockenshire's The Meadow Lark with the ensemble, performing on an antique C.G. Conn Eb cornet. He then played C.L.Barnhouse's duet variations on Rock of Ages on his York Monarch Bb cornet, for which he was joined by Dr. Joel Treybig on an antique Gisborne Defiance Class Bb cornet. The solos were met with great appreciation by the noon-hour crowd, made up of students, faculty, and Nashville natives that filled the Wilson Music Building atrium to hear the concert. Those in attendance obviously enjoyed the vintage pieces themselves, as well as hearing antique instruments performed upon so deftly.
