In addition to the Phil Smith Week in October 2005, University of Louisville Trumpet Area sponsored several events through the last school year.
The Illinois Brass Quintet presented a master class and recital on September 20, 2005. The class was given as a group, and several student brass quintets were coached as well as work with several individual students. During the recital, Louisville Brass joined the Illinois Brass Quintet for some antiphonal Gabrieli. Members of the group are: Ronald Romm and Mike Ewald, trumpets; Kazimierz Machala, horn; Elliot Chasanov, trombone; and Mark Moore, tuba.
Trumpet maker Andy Taylor visited on January 9, 2006, and presented an informative class which focused on acoustics of trumpet making, and particularly showcased his instruments.
On March 24 2006 renowned trumpet artist and composer Anthony Plog presented both trumpet and composition classes at the University. Professor at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany, Tony showed his great skill as a teacher, and was very generous with his time, as he worked with twelve trumpet students on solo and orchestral repertoire. Then, in a separate composition class, Tony talked about the business of being a composer as well as his current work on children's operas.
Trumpet artist and Professor of Trumpet at Boston University Terry Everson presented a master class on March 30 2006 at the University of Louisville. Work in the class dealt with very effective physical problem-solving as well as a wonderfully musical approach to the instrument.
