Ryan Nielsen was earlier this year named Professor of Trumpet at Brigham Young University-Idaho (BYU-Idaho) in Rexburg. His duties began in August of 2006.

Mr. Nielsen recently completed a Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance at Arizona State University where he received the Doc Severinsen Fellowship Award and a Regents’ Music Scholarship. His trumpet teachers include David Hickman, Marcellus Brown, Mark Lewis, and Steve Newton. Jazz studies have been with Mike Crotty, Michael Kocour, Sandon Mayhue, and Mark Watkins.

Mr. Nielsen’s teaching experience ranges from elementary to collegiate levels, his most recent posts including Instructor of Trumpet at Mountain Pointe High School, and Instructor of Advanced Trumpet and Jazz at Foothills Music Center, both of which are located in the Greater Phoenix area. He also taught at BYU-Idaho as Director of Concert Band and as Director of Jazz Lab Band while earning a BM degree there in 2004.

Ryan Nielsen received several awards for his jazz performance including First Prize in the university soloists division at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in 2003. He has also been a guest artist at the Gene Harris Jazz Festival as well as performing the solo trumpet chair in the Riverside Jazz Orchestra.
