At the masterclass ...

... and with the trumpet ensemble

The Phil Smith and Joe Turrin residency took place at the University of Louisville from October 13th through the 16th, 2005. It was set up by Dr. Michael Tunnell and made possible with the support of the University of Louisville Trumpet Ensemble, School of Music, University of Louisville Student Government, the International Trumpet Guild, the local music stores, and churches.

Thursday’s Master-class

The Thursday master-class opened with Philip Smith and Joseph Turrin performing Intrada by Mr. Turrin. After an inspiring performance, Mr. Smith worked with the following students: Daniel Whaley (Haydn Concerto- movement I), Matthew Janssen (Böhme Concerto- movement I), Kevin Byrne (Albinoni Concerto San Marco- movement I), Brian Glass (Hindmith Sonata- movement I), Melissa McDaniel (Frackenpol Three Statements for Trumpet Alone- movement I), and Ryan McCaslin (Copland selections from Outdoor Overture, Ives Variations on America, and Gershwin’s American in Paris). The master-class concluded with a short question and answer session with Mr. Smith.

Thursday Night Concert

The first concert of the residency opened with the University Trumpet Ensemble performing Joseph Turrin’s Festival Fanfare. Mr. Smith and Mr. Turrin then continued with Four Miniatures by Mr. Turrin and Catalonia by Richard Peaslee. The University Trumpet Ensemble performed Ronald LoPresti’s Heralding before being joined by Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith was soloist on Proclamation, Psalm, and Praise, by Dennis L. Horton, and A Mighty Fortress is Our God arranged by Paul Butcher. Following a short intermission, Mr. Smith joined the University of Louisville Wind Ensemble in a performance of Steven Gryc’s Even Song and the George Gershwin classic, Someone to Watch Over Me arranged by Stephen Bulla. Dr. Michael Tunnell, professor of trumpet at the University of Louisville, joined Mr. Smith on stage in an exciting performance of Joseph Turrin's Arabesque. The closing selection for this performance was Joseph Turrin’s Escapade. During the concert Mr. Smith wowed the audience with his beautiful sound, astounding technique, and his virtuosic musicianship.

Friday’s Master-class

The second master-class began with a soulful performance of Gershwin’s Someone to Watch Over Me and selections from Joseph Turrin’s Three Episodes. Following this performance the following University of Louisville trumpet students played for Mr. Smith. Michael Swope (selections from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony), Charles Calloway (Bitsch Quatre Variations sur un Theme de Scarlatti ) Don Johnson Jr. (Telemann Concerto in D- movement I), Marshall Kaufman IV (Clarke Maid of Mist), Zachary Schell (Ewazen Sonata- movement II), and Parker Keyes (Arutnian Concerto). The Friday master-class also ended in a short question and answer session.

Saturday’s Master-class

Mr. Smith began Saturday’s master-class performing several standard orchestral excerpts, including a few requests from the participants. This was followed by several University of Louisville trumpet students, including: Todd Obidowski (Torelli Concerto in D- movement I), Ryan Carpenter (Arutnian Concerto), Patrick McGinthy, (Strauss’ Don Juan and Handel’s The Trumpet Shall Sound), Sara Powell, (Handel Aria con Variazioni). Mr. Smith then joined the University of Louisville Orchestra Trumpet Section (Matthew Janssen, Dan Whaley, Michael Swope) as he worked with them on Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz.

Saturday’s Concert

The Finale concert featured Mr. Smith with the Derby City Brass Band, under the direction of John Jones. The band performed numerous selections alone as well as with Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith joined the Derby City Brass Band as soloist on Mark Fresh’s arrangement of Arthur Honegger’s Intrada, Ralph E. Pierce’s arrangement of Mily Balakireff’s Georgian Song, Kenneth Downie’s Trumpet Call, Joshua Swings the Battle and His Eye on the Sparrow by Stephen Bulla, James Curnow’s Concerpiece for Cornet, and Standing on the Promises by Douglas Court. Dr. Michael Tunnell joined Mr. Smith for an exhilarating performance of Peter Graham’s cornet duet, Quicksilver. Like Thursday night, Mr. Smith inspired the audience with his incredible display of musicality and mastery of his instrument.
