Dr. David Champouillon, associate professor of trumpet and jazz studies at East Tennessee State University and Bach Performing Artist, presented master classes and recitals at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in Ohio and the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver (Colorado) in a Bach-sponsored trip which took place early in March 2006.

Champouillon’s visit to CCM at the invitation of Professor of Trumpet Alan Seibert took place on March 9th and 10th. Collaborating with pianist Nana Shi in a classical trumpet recital, Champouillon performed Torelli’s Sinfonia Tromba, TV8, Sachse’s Concertino for E flat Trumpet and Turrin’s Caprice. Champouillon also coached several CCM trumpet performance major students as part of the master class attended by over 50 brass majors. Students coached included Jimmie Geiger (performing Napoli) and Jay Ginns (performing Rustiques). The focus of the master class and coaching session included terminology, cadenza playing, collaboration with the pianist, pitch and intonation concerns, rhythmic accuracy, significant recordings, and career paths. Champouillon performed a separate mini-jazz recital with student members of the jazz program and a separate master class for the jazz trumpet majors. The focus of the jazz clinics included “being the best trumpet player”, “practicing jazz alone will not make you a better or stronger trumpeter”, jazz articulations, and communication. Further, each jazz trumpet major had individual concerns addressed and worked on with Champouillon.

On March 11th, invited by University of Denver (DU) Professor of Trumpet Alan Hood, Champouillon performed a master class for the trumpet majors. The two-hour class was attended by the trumpet studio, other brass majors, and the public. The focus of the master class was “finding your B-flat trumpet sound” on all of the different pitched trumpets. Additionally, the need to learn the fundamentals on each of the individual trumpets before working on literature was stressed, being able to switch comfortably “on the fly” between the instruments was discussed and demonstrated, and career paths. Several students were coached, including Brynn Rector (performing Enesco’s Legend) and Peter Auricchio (performing Boehme’s Concerto in F minor). Champouillon also gave a private coaching session to Nora King-Smith who performed her master’s recital the next day. Ms. King-Smith is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, graduate assistant for Professor Hood at DU, and scheduled to be Dr. Robert Murray’s doctoral teaching assistant in the fall, 2006 at the University of Northern Colorado. She studied trumpet with David Champouillon during the 1990s in Utah.

Champouillon is a veteran of the USAF band system and holds degrees from the University of Miami, Eastern Illinois University, and the University of Northern Colorado. He has studied trumpet with Gilbert Johnson, Laurie McGaw, Ed Gornik, William Fielder, Elliott Topalian, James Mosher, Daniel Sapochetti, and George Coble. He has performed with numerous major and regional symphonies, co-written several books, is listed in numerous books as one of the significant trumpeters in the world, has written several feature articles for the ITG journal, presented classes at several ITG conferences, chaired the trumpet prelude committee and is chairing the 2006 ITG Jazz Competition.
