ITG member Raymond Burkhart was recently appointed to the Early Music/Historical Performance Practice faculty of Claremont Graduate University in southern California. He will teach natural trumpet and play with Concordia Clarimontis, the institution's resident early-music ensemble.
The concentration in Historical Performance Practices is newly available at the Masters and DMA levels at CGU. Natural trumpet instruction will address performance, equipment, historical, literature, and musical issues. Students are expected to provide their own instrument(s). Ray's personal collection of 3-hole, 4-hole, no-hole, coiled, and tirarsi trumpets will be available for trial.
Ray has been playing natural trumpet for over 25 years, since he first performed Reiche's Abblasen on his freshman recital with a borrowed instrument. Since then, he has performed with The Aulos Ensemble, Musica Angelica, Santa Fe Pro Musica, the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra, and at the Los Angeles Bach Festival, and has made two recordings with Pacific Classical Winds. He also performed twice on natural trumpet at the 1996 International Brassfest in Long Beach, California. In November he will perform J. S. Bach's cantatas 51 and 147 with Bach Collegium San Diego. Ray studied natural trumpet with Ed Tarr and Rob Roy McGregor at the University of Southern California. He also performs widely on unnatural trumpets.
The Music Department at Claremont Graduate University offers courses of study leading to the degrees of Master of Arts, Doctor of Church Music, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy. In addition, three professional Master of Arts degrees are offered that combine musicology with sub-specializations in music communications, arts administration, and information management. All programs are designed with special emphasis upon music within its interdisciplinary, cultural, and intellectual context. They combine comprehensive training in music literature, historical style analysis, and the study of performance practices, with the most recent analytical methodologies.
