| Meridian Arts Ensemble |
The Meridian Arts Ensemble will hold a one - week Brass and Percussion Chamber Music Seminar at East Carolina University at Greenville NC, from June 12 – 17, 2005. The Seminar is open to students age 13 and older, and will consist of a rigorous schedule of coachings, masterclasses, rehearsals, and concerts by the faculty and students. The Ensemble today confirmed that enrolment is still open and will remain so till further notice.
Up to 10 groups will be admitted: individual applicants as well as pre-formed ensembles are encouraged to apply. There will be one Honors Ensemble, which will receive a full scholarship, and will study one major work composed after 1950. Additional scholarships will be available, based on need.
The faculty will consist of the six-member Meridian Arts Ensemble, and the East Carolina University brass and percussion faculty. Thompson Hanks Jr. (New York Brass Quintet) will be this year’s Master Teacher during the Seminar, leading coachings, large ensembles, and masterclasses.
Founded in 1987, the Meridian Arts Ensemble has performed on four continents, in forty - nine states, on radio and television, in concert halls and in jazz and rock clubs. The MAE has commissioned and premiered countless new works and has recorded and released seven critically acclaimed CD’s. The MAE has performed extensively throughout the world and in the US. Major US venues such as the Library of Congress, the Tanglewood Festival, Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, Chicago’s Symphony Hall and Pick-Staiger Hall, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and Atlanta’s Spivey Hall have been hosts to the Meridian Arts Ensemble’s performances. The MAE has also performed and given masterclasses in Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Cuba.
Television performances have included PBS’s Live from Lincoln Center, as well as international appearances on German, Dutch, and Austrian state networks. The MAE has been heard on NPR and PRI affiliates, on commercial classical stations, on alternative stations across the country, and on Voice of America and Radio Free Europe. Radio broadcasts have included NPR’s Weekend Edition, St. Paul Sunday Morning, WDR (Germany), Dutch National Radio, and ORF (Austria). The Meridian Arts Ensemble records exclusively for Channel Classics, and has released seven recordings to date. The Ensemble’s 8th recording on Channel will be released in the Fall of 2005.
