Dr. Robert Weatherly, former principal trumpet with the St. Louis Symphony and the U.S. Air Force Band, died Friday, January 28 in Hammond, Louisiana. He was 83.
Born in Coffeyville, Kansas, Weatherly studied trumpet at the Julliard School of Music in New York City. Following a successful performing career, he switched to academia and taught trumpet and directed the bands at Southeastern Louisiana University, where he later became the department head. Dr. Weatherly also performed with the Radio City Music Hall orchestra.
