Los Angeles Philharmonic player Rob Roy McGregor writes with news from his company Balquhidder Music. As well as a new website (launched early 2005) Balquhidder has new pieces that McGregor would like to bring to colleagues’ attention. Balquhidder, a publishing company specializing in pedagogical and ensemble works for trumpet and other brass instruments, was founded in 1991.
The new website offers information about each piece, cover art, free PDF sample files from each work, a news and free downloads section, and secure online shopping. McGregor says "We are very excited about our new site and hope you will take a look. Please visit us and see that we have finally entered the 21st Century!"
One of the new publications available at the site is a book of piano accompaniments to ten of the Charlier Études by Jean-Marie Cottet (reference BQ-92). These were composed in the 1990s at the suggestion of Pierre Thibaud and are available in two keys for use with either Bb or C trumpet. (The trumpet line is not included – you will need your own Charlier book for this.)
Another new item stocked by Balquhidder is from Carl Fischer: the H.A. VanderCook Solo Collection of 25 Characteristic Pieces for Solo Trumpet and Piano. In his foreword to this publication (ref. WF-45) McGregor comments, "VanderCook demonstrates a remarkable grasp of how best to impart engaging instruction on the instrument." Collectors of trumpet relationships will be interested to note that McGregor stands in the "grand-pupil" relationship to VanderCook, who taught McGregor’s teacher Clifford Lillya.
These publications and many others are easily accessible at the Balquhidder website, where visitors will also be able to find out the reason for the company's intriguing name. Balquhidder may also be contacted by phone or fax on (+1) 818-957-1726.
