Conference Host for the 2005 ITG Conference Joseph Bowman made an eight-day tour of prominent Pacific Rim countries in the Fall of 2004, in an effort to inform students and teachers about the many opportunities available to them with this upcoming event. The ITG Conference will take place on Tuesday-Friday, June 21-24, 2005, at The Grand Hotel in downtown Bangkok.

China

Bowman began the tour by visiting Beijing, China on October 15-17, 2004, where he was the guest of Professor Zhonghui Dai, professor of trumpet at the Central Conservatory of Music. After giving a master class for the students at the conservatory, Bowman held an informational session for more than fifteen prominent Chinese trumpet teachers.

Student travel scholarships

Among the items discussed were the special student travel scholarships made available for ITG 2005 by the Royal Thai Government. Bowman encouraged teachers to submit the names of deserving students to the host, for consideration. (To submit a student’s name from your country, email Dr. Bowman at 2005travelscholarships@trumpetguild.org) He also passed out specific information concerning conference competitions and scholarships, as well as travel information. At the conclusion of the meeting, Bowman answered questions about travel opportunities in Thailand, and the various activities at this year’s event.

Australia and Japan

Sydney , Australia was the next stop, where from October 18-20, Bowman enjoyed the hospitality of Brian Evans (ITG Board Member and News Correspondent for Australia) and the Australian Trumpet Guild. Two information sessions were held for trumpeters from that region, and more information promises to be distributed to the rest of the country.

The final destination was Tokyo, Japan, where Bowman held a variety of meetings with prominent trumpet players and teachers. As one such meeting, Naohiro Tsuken took time to visit. Mr. Tsuken is principal trumpet in the NHK Symphony Orchestra and teaches at several universities. He himself gave a master class at the ITG Santa Barbara conference, and will again be appearing at the Bangkok conference. A prominent member of the Japan Trumpet Association, Mr. Tsuken agreed to spread the word to students and teachers alike across Japan. The meetings would not have been possible without the hard work of David Herzog, principal trumpet of the New Japan Philharmonic, who will be appearing at the Bangkok conference, giving a presentation on living and working in a foreign country, as a trumpet player.
