Bill Jones of Appalachian State University writes: "On October 21-23 the Brass Chamber Music Forum, an event of historical and musical importance, will take place at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. The two most "historied" brass quintets, the American Brass Quintet and the New York Brass Quintet (NYBQ), will come together to celebrate the NYBQ's 50th anniversary, to discuss and record brass quintet history (the NYBQ was the first professional brass quintet and invented the modern instrumentation/ensemble), hear premieres of new works, get new information on repertoire, and discuss performance practice, and enjoy great performances.
We will be joined by Eric Ewazen, Gunther Schuller, Martin Hughes (former trombonist in the Annapolis Brass Quintet) and Harvey Phillips. Please visit our web site (link below) for complete details on opportunities for professional brass players, students, and composers. This will be the most informational brass quintet conference ever held! If you work at a college, university, or conservatory, brochures should arrive soon. If you would like a poster, please contact us. Registration (early registration is recommended) will be operational at the web site shortly.
