Markku Renko to Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory

Markku Renko has been named professor of trumpet at Pop & Jazz Conservatory in Helsinki, Finland.

At the Pop & Jazz Conservatory, he will also teach jazz ensembles, big bands and brass pedagogy. Renko is a Pop & Jazz Conservatory alumnus and has taught there on and off since 1994. He maintains an active career as a solo performer, freelance trumpeter and conductor. His three solo recordings have been reviewed in ITG Journal. Besides his own band, Renko has worked with Rich Shemaria, Georgie Fame, Joe Henderson, Marvin Stamm, Randy Brecker and Lenny Pickett.

The Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory was established in 1972. The forty-year-old school offers three-year program in Pop/Jazz Musician and Pop/Jazz Music Technology. 120 students are enrolled in vocational studies, which are subsidized by the Finnish government. Additionally, there are 650 non-vocational students. The conservatory employs about 90 teachers, half who teach full-time. The conservatory`s facilities include a 24-track recording studio and a 350-seat concert hall. Annual music festivals in the spring and fall feature the conservatory`s students and visiting musicians. International music festival Close Encounters is held annually in St. Petersburg and Helsinki at the same time in late January and early February. Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory cooperates with several organizations, including Berklee International Network (BIN) and International Association of the Schools of Jazz.
