2012 Eran Zoldan Trumpet Competition

Every year the Eran Zoldan competition takes place for a different instrument to honor the memory of Eran Zoldan who played guitar, piano, and clarinet and died tragically in a plane crash at the age of twenty. This year featured the trumpet.

 

The 2012 Eran Zoldan Trumpet Competition took place between June 24 and 28 at the Ra’anana Music Center in Israel. The competition had two categories, one for youth (trumpeters younger than sixteen) and one for adult (trumpeters between sixteen and twenty-two years old.)Jury chairman Tomislav Spoljar speaking

The judges this year were Tomislav Spoljar of Croatia, Chairman, Yigal Meltzer, Principal Trumpet of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and Rami Oren, Associate Principal Trumpet of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Guy Porat (oboe) and the Zoldan familly.

The preliminary piece for the youth category was the first movement of the Hummel Trumpet Concerto and a choice of J. Kaminski’s Trumpet Concertino no.1 or 2, Bozza’s Badinage or Caprice, the entire J. B. Arban Carnival of Venice, Naulais Jérôme’s Canicule, Brandt’s Concertino no. 2, or the Goedicke Concert Etude. The finals round was a performance of one piece of choice from the list or from the first round.

In the adult category, contestants played a Romantic-era piece from Boehme Concerto (first movement), Brandt Concertino no. 1 or no. 2, Enescu’s Legende, or another pre-approved work. They also played the first movement of the Chaynes Concerto no. 1, Honneger Intrada, Jolivet Concertino, first movement of the Tomasi Concerto or other pre-approved work.

Winners received 1,000 NIS in the Youth Category and 3,000 NIS with the invitation to perform as a soloist with the Ra’anana Symphonette Orchestra and a recorded recital at the Ra’anana Music Center auditorium for the Adult Category. All participants attended master classes, recitals, and other competition events.Yonathan Yeshayahu, Raz Arad, and Yonathan Feiner.
