Burkhart Isle of Colours premiere

Raymond Burkhart's new composition for brass quintet, Isle of Colours, was premiered on May 19 in Stanford, California, by the Premiere Brass Quintet (of Los Angeles, CA) on a program devoted entirely to his compositions.

Isle of Colours was commissioned by the nonprofit scientific publisher, Annual Reviews. The three-movement suite for 2 Bb trumpets, horn, trombone, and tuba honors three great British artists: J.M.W. Turner, John Constable, and David Hockney. The first movement (Turner) is strongly thematic, evoking Turner's strong use of color. The second movement (Constable) is a theme and variations inspired by Constable's well-known "Salibury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds." The third movement (Hockney) is a cool bossa nova, with solos for trombone, horn, and trumpet. It references Hockney's hip and highly popular work in both England and Los Angeles. The members of the Premiere Brass Quintet for this performance (L to R in the attached photo) were Kevin Brown (tpt), Loren Marsteller (tbn), Bethany Zare (hn), David Holben (tba), and Ray Burkhart (tpt).
