Saint Louis Brass Quintet

On February 12, 2004, the St. Louis Brass Quintet visited the campus of Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi for a master class and concert. The quintet is made up of Allen Dean (Yale School of Music) and Ray Sasaki (University of Texas at Austin), trumpets, Thomas Bacon (Houston Ballet), horn, Melvyn Jernigan (former member of the St. Louis Symphony), trombone, and Mike Dunn (University of Alabama), serving as a last minute substitution for Daniel Perantoni (Indiana University) on tuba. The St. Louis Brass performed a fantastic program consisting of works by Praetorius, DeMars, Plog, de Falla and Piazzola in an evening concert presented at McComas Theater. Earlier in the day they presented a master class at Bettersworth Auditorium which began as a performance and question and answer session for all the brass students before breaking into a high brass session (with Dean, Sasaki and Bacon) and a low brass session (with Jernigan and Dunn) to listen to MSU students perform and offer more specific suggestions. Both the teaching and the performance by this great quintet was exciting and inspiring to all who attended.
